You cannot edit an AI answer directly, and there is no support line for it. You fix the answer by fixing what the AI reads. Check what each engine currently says about you, trace every wrong claim to a public source (your own website, your Google Business Profile, a directory, an old article), correct the sources you control, publish one plain page that states your facts, and recheck on a schedule. The feedback buttons are worth a minute. The source fixes are what actually change the answer.
A software company owner described it like this in March 2025: "A customer emailed asking about whether my software can do X, Y, and Z and I stated no. They then respond with a copy paste of their ChatGPT log where it confidently stated that my software can indeed do that thing." The customer trusted the machine over the owner.
A dentist reported the harder version in January 2026: "the Ai response that is generated is incorrect and says that I work at a different practice and is hurting my business. It is directing new patients to the wrong practice." And a year earlier, an owner asking Google how to remove a wrong AI description of their business got no removal path at all. 160 other owners clicked "I have the same question" on that thread.
If you are reading this because a customer just showed you a wrong answer, you are in the most common version of this story. Here is what is actually happening and what fixes it.
Why does AI get your business wrong?
An AI answer about your business is assembled, at answer time, from your public record: your website, your Google Business Profile, directories, articles, reviews, and forum posts. The engine reads what it can find and writes a confident summary of it.
Wrong claims almost always trace back to that record. The usual causes, in the order we see them:
- A stale page. An old price list, a dropped service still advertised, a previous address that was never taken down.
- Conflicting listings. Two directories with different hours, or a profile that disagrees with your website. The machine picks one, and it may pick the wrong one.
- A thin record. Nothing public states what you actually do and do not do, so the engine fills the gap from whatever is nearby, including competitors and lookalikes.
- A name mix-up. A business with a similar name gets merged into your answer, which is what happened to the dentist above.
None of these are malicious and none of them are permanent. They are records problems, and records can be corrected.
Can you get the wrong answer taken down?
Mostly no, and it is better to know that now. There is no phone line and no removal form. Google shows a feedback link under its AI answers, ChatGPT takes thumbs-down feedback, and your Google Business Profile has a suggest-an-edit path. Use them, they cost a minute each. But the documented owner cases, including the thread with 160 owners asking the same question, show that removal requests on their own rarely change anything.
The lever that works is upstream. The engine will assemble tomorrow's answer the same way it assembled today's. Change what it reads and you change what it writes.
The fix, in six steps
- See it for yourself first. This is the ten-minute step, and it is the work order for everything else. Ask ChatGPT, Gemini, and Google the questions your customers ask: "What does [your business name] do?", "What does it cost?", "Where is it?" Screenshot every wrong claim.
- Trace each wrong claim to its source. Search the wrong fact together with your business name. It usually lives somewhere public: an old directory entry, a stale page on your own site, an article, or a similarly named business.
- Correct everything you control. Your website first, then your Google Business Profile, then social bios and the directories you can log in to. The goal is one consistent set of facts everywhere your name appears.
- Publish one page a machine can quote. What you do, what you do not do, your prices or starting prices, your location, your hours, your contact details, in plain sentences. Most wrong answers survive because no current page contradicts them.
- Use the report buttons. Feedback under the Google AI answer, thumbs-down in ChatGPT, suggest-an-edit on your profile. Low odds individually, free collectively.
- Recheck monthly. Same questions, same engines, note what changed. Answers move when sources move, and the movement takes weeks rather than days.
There is also a technical half to step 4: machine-readable markup that tells engines exactly which facts are yours. That part is a job for whoever runs your website, and our guide to schema and the entity graph covers it.
What to say to the customer holding the wrong answer
Do not argue with the screenshot. The customer did nothing wrong, and the log looks authoritative. Thank them for showing you, state plainly what you do offer, and put the correct information in writing so they leave holding something accurate.
Then treat the moment as a signal rather than an embarrassment. A customer who shows you a wrong answer is the visible case. The invisible cases read the same answer and never got in touch, and that quiet loss is the real cost of a wrong record.
Why this is worth fixing now
The people reading AI answers about your business are not early adopters anymore. They are your customers, and a growing share of them trust what the machine says as much as they trust reviews. A wrong answer left standing works against you every day it stands.
Want the full check, not just the wrong-info part?
Our free AI Visibility Audit covers 12 checks: what the engines say about you, whether they can read your site, and whether your pages give them anything worth quoting. Each check has a 5-minute test and the fix.

The AI answer is a mirror of your public record. When the record is stale, scattered, or silent, the machine improvises, and it improvises confidently. Fix the record, give the engines one current page worth quoting, and recheck monthly the way you check your bank balance. Every step above is checkable, and the first one takes ten minutes.
One forward before you go: send this post to whoever runs your website and ask one question: which page on our site states what we do, what we charge, and where we are, plainly enough for a machine to quote it? If the answer is none, that is the first fix.
Frequently asked questions
How do I correct wrong information ChatGPT gives about my business?
You correct the sources, because you cannot edit the answer itself. Ask the engines what they currently say about you and note every wrong claim. Trace each claim to a public source: an old page on your own site, a stale directory listing, your Google Business Profile, or an article. Correct every source you control, publish one current page that states your facts plainly, use the report buttons where they exist, and recheck monthly. Answers change when the sources they read change.
Can I contact ChatGPT or Google to remove a wrong AI answer?
There is no removal line. Google shows a feedback option under AI answers and ChatGPT accepts thumbs-down feedback, and both are worth the minute, but documented owner cases show removal requests rarely succeed on their own. Owners who asked Google to delete a wrong AI description of their business were directed back to fixing their business information. The durable fix is changing what the engines read.
Why does AI say my business offers services it does not offer?
Because the answer is assembled from your public record, and the record is stale, conflicting, or thin. An old page still advertising a dropped service, two listings with different details, or a business with a similar name can each feed a wrong claim. Where the record is silent, the engine fills the gap from whatever is nearby, and it states the result with full confidence either way.
A customer showed me a wrong ChatGPT answer. What should I say?
Thank them, and do not argue with the screenshot. State plainly what you do offer and put it in writing so they have something correct to hold. Then treat it as a signal: for every customer who showed you the wrong answer, others read it and never got in touch. The same day, run the ten-minute check in this post and start tracing the wrong claim to its source.
How long do AI answers take to update after I fix the sources?
There is no published timetable, and the engines refresh at different speeds. Treat weeks as normal and re-ask the same questions monthly, keeping a note of what changed. What is consistent across documented cases is the direction: answers track the public record, so a corrected record is the only input you control.
How do I stop wrong AI answers coming back?
Keep one page on your own site that states what you do, what you do not do, your prices or starting prices, your location, and your hours, and keep it current. Keep your Google Business Profile and directory listings agreeing with it. Recheck the engines monthly with the same questions. Machine-readable markup on that page helps engines lift the right facts; that part is a job for whoever runs your website.
