Google rank and AI answers are decided by different processes. AI engines run their own background searches, read pages in passages, and only name businesses they can retrieve and confirm. When ChatGPT acts like you do not exist, it is nearly always one of three checkable causes: the engine cannot read your site, your pages answer nothing in a liftable block, or nothing beyond your own site confirms you. Each cause has a test that takes minutes, and the tests are below.
In November 2024 a business owner posted this to an SEO forum: "ChatGPT acts like my business doesn't exist for a search term (product) that I rank 2nd on Google for." When he asked the machine directly why it never mentioned him, it replied: "oh yes, that is another great company." Second place on Google, and to the AI he was a rumour it would politely agree with when prompted.
If you have run the same test on your own business and got the same silence, the explanation is mechanical rather than mysterious, and every part of it can be checked.
Try it yourself first
Before any fix, get your own baseline. It takes five minutes. Ask ChatGPT the question your customers would ask: "best [what you sell] in [your city]" and then "what does [your business name] do?" Note who gets named, and whether your own answer is accurate, vague, or missing. That result is the work order for the rest of this post.
Why doesn't a Google ranking carry over?
Your rank is a position in one ranked list for one query. An AI answer is assembled differently: the engine runs several related background searches, reads the retrieved pages in passages, and builds an answer from the passages it can lift and verify, naming the businesses those passages support.
The measured numbers show how loosely the two systems are coupled. seoClarity found that 94% of Google AI Overviews cite at least one URL from the top 20 organic results, so ranking clearly helps. Ahrefs, across 4 million AI Overview citations, found that only about 38% of citations ranked in the top 10 for the triggering query. Most answers lean on well-ranked pages somewhere, and most individual citations still come from outside the visible top 10. Ranking gets you considered. It does not get you named.
Cause 1: the engine cannot read your site
This is the most common cause and the fastest to check. OpenAI states plainly that sites opted out of its search crawler, OAI-SearchBot, "will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers." Many sites blocked every bot with "AI" in the name back in 2023 to stay out of model training, and that old robots.txt rule now silently removes them from ChatGPT search. Blocking GPTBot (training) and blocking OAI-SearchBot (search visibility) are different decisions, and plenty of sites made the second one by accident.
The same applies to plain indexing: Google's AI features only draw on pages that are indexed and snippet-eligible. An unindexed services page cannot be cited by anything.
The test: open yoursite.com/robots.txt and look for OAI-SearchBot. Then ask whoever runs your website whether your key pages show as indexed in Google Search Console. Five minutes, both.
Cause 2: your pages answer nothing in one block
Selection happens at the level of a single passage. The engine lifts the paragraph that answers a question on its own, readable without the rest of the page. A homepage built from slogans, a services page that lists names without saying what they include or cost, a location that appears only in a footer image: none of that gives the machine a passage worth carrying.
The research backs this up. The GEO study presented at KDD 2024 measured which content changes earn visibility in generative answers: adding statistics lifted it by about 33%, quotations by about 41%, and cited sources by about 27%, while keyword stuffing did roughly nothing. Concrete, attributed, self-contained facts are what get lifted.
The test: read the first paragraph of your most important page. Does it state what you do, for whom, and where, in plain sentences? If a stranger could not answer those three questions from that paragraph alone, neither can the machine.
Cause 3: nothing else confirms you exist
Engines assemble answers from several surfaces and favour businesses whose facts agree across them. If your own website is the only place on the internet claiming you exist, the machine has one uncorroborated source, and it will often name a competitor with a directory profile, reviews, and a mention or two instead, even when your site is better.
The test: search your business name plus your city on an engine you never use. Count how many results are not your own website or social pages. Zero or one is the problem confirmed.
What to fix first
- Retrievability. Unblock OAI-SearchBot if it is blocked, and get unindexed key pages indexed. Nothing else matters until the engine can read you.
- One answer-first page. Rewrite your most important page so the first paragraph under each heading answers that heading's question on its own, with your services, starting prices, and location stated plainly.
- Confirmation. Make two or three listings agree exactly with your website, and earn one independent mention. Consistency beats volume.
Then re-run the five-minute self-test monthly and log what changes. No engine publishes an update timetable, so weeks to months is the honest expectation, and the monthly log is how you catch the movement.

ChatGPT is not ignoring you out of preference. It names what it can retrieve, lift, and confirm. Your Google rank proves one system already trusts you. Make the same facts retrievable, liftable, and confirmed, and the other system finally has what it needs to say your name.

Frequently asked questions
Why does ChatGPT not mention my business when I rank on Google?
Because the two systems choose differently. Your Google rank is a position in one ranked list. An AI answer is assembled from several background searches, read in passages, and only names businesses it can retrieve and confirm. If the engine cannot read your site, finds no passage that answers the question on its own, or finds nothing beyond your own site confirming you, it names businesses it can confirm instead, whatever your ranking.
Does ranking first on Google put me in ChatGPT or AI answers?
It helps without deciding. seoClarity found 94% of Google AI Overviews cite at least one top-20 organic URL, so ranking matters. But Ahrefs measured that only about 38% of AI Overview citations ranked in the top 10 for the triggering query, because engines pull sources from related background searches. Ranking gets you considered. Retrievable, quotable, confirmed content gets you named.
How do I check whether ChatGPT can see my website?
Two checks. First, open yoursite.com/robots.txt and look for OAI-SearchBot: OpenAI states that sites opted out of OAI-SearchBot are not shown in ChatGPT search answers, and many sites blocked it by accident in 2023 while blocking AI scrapers. Second, ask whoever runs your website whether your key pages are indexed in Google Search Console, since an unindexed page cannot be cited. Both checks take about five minutes.
Do I need a special file or a paid tool to show up in ChatGPT?
No. Google documents that no special files or markup are required for its AI features, and ChatGPT needs crawler access rather than a subscription. Be cautious with tools that promise guaranteed AI placement; no such guarantee is available from any engine. The inputs that matter are open crawler access, indexed pages, self-contained answers, and independent confirmation of who you are.
How long does it take to start appearing in AI answers?
No engine publishes a timetable, so treat weeks to months as the honest range. The practical approach is to fix the three causes in order, then re-ask the engines the same customer questions monthly and log what changes. Movement follows the record: once your site is retrievable, your pages quotable, and your identity confirmed off-site, you have supplied everything the engines document wanting.
What should I fix first?
In this order: retrievability, then answers, then confirmation. First confirm robots.txt does not block OAI-SearchBot and your key pages are indexed, because nothing else matters until the engine can read you. Then rewrite your most important page so its first paragraph states what you do, for whom, and where. Then make two or three listings agree with your site and earn one independent mention. Each step feeds the next.
